Member article - Feeling the Truth of Tek Jansen

A bit of a conversation from Tekjansen.com:

Liz: If we knew absolutely for certain if this site was "real" or not, then what would we do?

Ally: Well, I don't know what we'd all do. But, I hope most of us would just promptly ignore the fact, whatever it happened to be. This is America. We do it all the time as it is. There are bigger things to focus on, after all. Like, new chapters being released. Who doesn't love it when a new chapter is released? I know I do.

Stephen Colbert discussing what truthiness means:

Facts matter not at all. Perception is everything. It's certainty. People love the President because he's certain of his choices as a leader, even if the facts that back him up don't seem to exist. It's the fact that he's certain that is very appealing to a certain section of the country. I really feel a dichotomy in the American populace. What is important? What you want to be true, or what is true?

Tekjansen.com thrives on truthiness. Most members (most vocal members, anyway) do not seem to care that the entire site is based on some sort of strange ambiguity about who is running it. And, anyway, despite Tek's relation to Stephen Colbert, there really isn't much about Colbert or his show on the site. If a random visitor were to wander around the site, he or she would probably be quite perplexed. Isnít this supposed to be about Stephen Colbert?

Well, truthiness be told, no. Itís not about Stephen Colbert. Itís about the feeling that it might be about Stephen Colbert. Most people who come to the site do so because theyíre fans of Colbert, but when one looks at the available evidence, it is not at all clear whether Colbert is involved with the site or not. But, the perception remains that he is.

Every now and then, somebody shows up and demands some sort of proof that the site creators are somehow connected with Colbert and/or Comedy Central. That person is inevitably shot down by members who rely on truthiness. Long-time members do not care about the facts. They care about what feels true, what they want to be true.

And the truthiness is, not many people know who runs Tekjansen.com. But, a true Tek fan can't care about the facts. The spirit of the site is the spirit of truthiness. It is the perfect fan site for Stephen Colbert, asking fans if they really need facts or if they can feel the truth.
